The O Antiphons make a truly wonderful Catholic tradition because they are rich with meaning and tradition. Each gets across the message highlighting a different title for the Messiah

  • Sapientia (Wisdom)
  • Adonai (Lord and Ruler)
  • Radix Jesse (Root of Jesse)
  • Clavis David (Key of David)
  • Oriens (Dawn of the East)
  • Rex Gentium (King of the Gentiles)
  • Emmanuel (God With Us)

Each refers to the prophecy of Isaiah about the Messiah. Each night on the octave   before Christmas, we ask Christ to come, and invite him by a different name.

What is also interesting is that the first letters of each title when written backwards becomes “ERO CRAS” whcih means “Tomorrow, I will Come” in Latin
